Process Service Involving LAPD Headquarters

Overview

Headquarters is not automatically the proper legal recipient.

LAPD publishes its headquarters address at 100 West 1st Street. That location may be relevant to an assignment, but it is not automatically the correct recipient for documents naming LAPD, a police officer, a City department, or the City of Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles City Clerk's official service-of-process page states that the City Clerk can accept summonses and complaints naming the City of Los Angeles and City departments, except HACLA. Whether that statement applies depends on the actual documents and named parties; it should not be generalized to every document or target.

Separate the named party from the building address.

• Provide the complete documents, caption, court, deadline, and matter number.
